The Wonders of Oil of Oregano :)

ImageI am just beginning to learn about Oil of Oregano (no this isn’t your mama’s pizza/spaghetti oregano). This is wild medicinal oregano from the Mediterranean. I first read about it in Heather VanVorous’ Book, “IBS the first year” page 169. The product I bought is from N. American Herb & Spice. I should have bought it from Amazon. I paid too much for my bottle 😦

This tiny little bottle of oil packs a major punch! It seems to be a wonder drug, you just cannot use it on an on-going basis. I’m finding information that 6 weeks may be the max before you take a break. It has healed people’s sinus infections, calmed their tummy troubles, helped with skin conditions AND they brush their teeth with it!

Here are a few places to get information:

WebMD: Oregano overview
“Oregano is used for respiratory tract disorders such as coughs, asthma, croup and bronchitis. It is also used for gastrointestinal (GI) disorders such as heartburn and bloating. Other uses include treating menstrual cramps, rheumatoid arthritis, urinary tract disorders…headaches and heart conditions. There’s a lot more, you’ll just have to read it for yourself 🙂 Read more…

WikiHow:  How to Get Health Benefits from Oregano OilThere is some scientific research that suggests anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, anti-fungal and anti-parasitic properties of oregano oil. Even though reliable human trials are still lacking, oregano oil has considerable anecdotal support for its healing properties. Read more…

Natural News: Oil of Oregano: A Powerhouse for the Alternative Medicine Cabinet
Oregano is nature’s antibiotic. It may be one reason why people who eat a Mediterranean diet tend to live longer and healthier lives. The wild oregano plant has been shown to kill unwanted bacteria, fungus, yeast, parasites and viruses. It’s a powerful antihistamine. New research is finding that oil of oregano is as effective against colitis as prescription drugs without the harmful side effects. Read more…

Amazon: N. American Herb & Spice
I chose this oreganol because this is what I bought. The man at the health food store said it is one of the best and is very pure and strong. Who am I to argue? This company even claims it on their web site – “We use only the purest, highest quality ingredients in our Oregano oil products. This is the true wild oregano P73. Oreganol P73 is a blend of edible species of wild oregano grown on natural, mineral-rich soil from the Mediterranean.” Read more…
They also have several other products using wild oregano oil 🙂
No, I do not have stock in this company. I just trust it.

Let’s hear from several Amazon reviewers about Oil of Oregano…
EVE GRANGER: I had a persistent cold and ear ache for some time, and when it got to the point that I could barely hear, I went to the Whole Body department of Whole Foods and asked them to help me. They told me to buy this Oreganol, but the .45 oz bottle cost $25, and I told them no way. Well, they gave me a free sample (always a good sign), and this stuff drained my ears and sinuses about five minutes after dosage (I did buy the product). It works fantastically. It tastes like, well, a super-concentrated dose of oregano, which is not very delicious at all.
MJP: I have spent the last 20+ years in a congested stupor. I’ve been on antibiotics, steroids, allergy meds, cold meds. I’ve used Netti pots, salene spray, and have done 5 years of allergy shots. I’ve tried everything. If anyone around me had a cold, I would catch it and then follow it up with a sinus infection. About a month ago I stumbled onto Oil of Oregano. After reading all the positive reviews I figured I had nothing to lose, so I ordered the .45 oz bottle and started taking 2 drops under my tongue each day. After about a week I was able to sleep through the night….
C ADAMS:  This product is ok…..just ok but it is not as strong as Source Naturals Oil of Oregano which I found to be much more effective in helping me fight off colds and other troublesome winter ailments. If you have never used Oil of Oregano, I don’t think you will be disappointed but I would definitely recommend the Oil of Oregano by Source Naturals over this brand.
SEE, I’m an equal opportunity reviewer!
WATERS: This is the nuclear bomb in the natural treatment arsenal. This isn’t some kind of psychic magic crystal voodoo snake oil fairy dust junk too many “natural” people believe in thereby encouraging the equally silly wholesale rejection of real, effective natural treatment approaches.
ME: First, I’m having trouble finding reviews from people who have GI problems, so, me, myself & I have used it for GI problems. My stomach was spasming, bloating, gas, you name it…i started taking the oil of oregano; just 2 drops under my tongue once a day. I have to admit, I’m no longer having GI problems! My husband and daughter-in-law are getting sick from a cold. My husband thought the oil was “VOODOO” medicine and didn’t want to try it. He called the dr. for antibiotics. For various reasons, he couldn’t get the antibiotics so he had to rely on the oil. I heard him say yesterday when I asked him about getting the antibiotics, “I don’t need them!” I asked him to repeat that statement, just to rub it in. My bad 🙂

Certainly, don’t buy at least this brand, at the store. You’ll pay $10 more than on Amazon. As far as dosing, there are a lot of theories. I’m thinking, you just have to decide for yourself. If it’s just a nasty headache or GI problems, I believe the 2 drops under the tongue will do it. If not increase to twice a day. If you are warding off a cold or flu, maybe want to do 3x a day. If you have a BAD whatever, then use more.

DO NOT use the oil undiluted. Not in your mouth, not on your skin. I believe the oil comes in gel caps. My stomach is way too sensitive, so I’ll stick with the drops. You can find how to make it safe to use on your skin by googling. Most places say to put it in olive oil.

What next? Genetically Engineered SALMON :(

ImageCan you believe it? I received an email last night encouraging everyone to contact Kroger (the largest food chain in the states) to not buy genetically-engineered fish. They have said they will not unless the FDA approves it–then all bets are off.

This article entitled “The Threats and benefits of GM fish” from the government should give you a start on learning about this frightening possibility.

The sad thing about all of this (no not sad, terrifying) is that if the FDA approves genetically engineered fish, no one has to provide this information on their nutrition label! Yep, that’s right, we won’t know!

I need to do more research and will keep my blog updated. Oh, man…what’s next?

Rice Krispies – GF!

Didn’t know regular Kellogg’s Rice Krispies has gluten in it!? I think a lot of people don’t know. It’s not very available in my town, but I’m certainly going to rectiGF rice krispiesfy that fast. I have already posted this info in one of my “did you know” posts, but this is too important to keep buried.

Kellogg’s Rice Krispies in the traditional blue box contains GLUTEN 😦  The malt flavoring is derived from barley. The good news: They have a YELLOW box that is gluten free. Yeah! I can have rice krispie treats without getting glutened!

I called Kellogg’s and they told me who actually carries their product where I live.
You also can call 1-800-962-1413.  The ONLY place where I live that carries the GF Rice Krispies is Rite-Aid.
Color me surprised. I fully intend to call my favorite local grocery chain and ask them to carry it also. If you want to do this, I was given the package # 3800055019 to make it easier to order. ENJOY!

Oh, surprise, surprise, you can buy a 4-pack at Amazon!

Just to name a few

Energy snacks here, come and get ’em!

I’m so glad I went to the Gluten Free Allergy Free Expo this past weekend. I tasted a lot of different products and now I’ve made a new friend who needs help with snacks when she’s out on the training field (military). So, here’s products that I tasted and have my “SEAL OF APPROVAL” and some I have not:

NOW energy bar

NOW: No energy wasted energy bars. Oh, the coconut one is heaven. There was a party going on in my mouth! I have a pamphlet the NOW people provided and they’re all about the ATHLETE. These bars are the perfect solution for providing the necessary high-potency energy and nutrition needed to Power Any Adventure. NOW products are made with all-natural, non-GMO ingredients, gluten free. They have a store locator. Even in my small town, there are about 10 places to buy these bars!

mambo-glamourEnjoy Life: Not nuts! Seed and Fruit. Enjoy Life has a variety of different products can be purchase at Amazon. Their web site also has a store locator and on-line locator. I saw on their product page that they have Plentils. Oh Heavens, these are great! They taste like baked potato chips but the first ingredient is LENTILS! My husband got a snack bag at the Expo and I found it open on the counter. I tasted one–it was definitely hard to stop eating them! Okay, Plentils can’t be taken out onto the training field unless you want to eat powdered Plentils by the time you’re done, but they’ll be soooooo good later!

highproteinNogii. NoGii Bars were created to provide a healthy NO GLUTEN alternative for active lifestyles. Whether you are on-the-go, at play, or in the gym, NoGii bars are formulated to give you and your family good, clean, gluten-free nutritional food choices. It looks like these bars are sold at Walgreen’s, CVS, Costco and other stores. Yep, even Amazon sells ’em!

BOMS logoBakery on Main Street.  They have LOTS of products. I’ve honed in on their TRUE bars, but they have granola that you can put in ziplocks and take with you…just a thought 🙂 For their store locator, my web crawler kept thinking. So, of course, I went to my next favorite store…you got it AMAZON! — OH MY, not a good source. Amazon only carries BOMS granola 😦   Their products seem a little hard to find. I did see VITACOST sells a lot of their products.

EL’s Medleys. If you were a fan of Gardettos, you will absolutely love EL’s Medleys. Once again, EL’s has a store locator, you can purchase them on their website, or you can go to Amazon. Is there ANYthing Amazon doesn’t carry? Okay, this product isn’t necessarily a great snack to take out into the training field, but I had to tell you about this wonderful product!

pineapple crunchiesCRUNCHIES Freeze Dried Natural Snacks. I thought they only had fruit crunchies, but they’ve got vegetables too. These are VERY GOOD. I can see offering them to toddlers, but if you’re looking to pack some fruit into your training bag or day trip or school lunch, oh Heaven’s, you can’t go wrong! Guess where you can buy these online…you got it…AMAZON!

All these products, I have personally tried. I LOVE them! If anyone has any more “on the go” snacks that they love, please let me know and I’ll add them to my list 🙂

Wonderful GF soups, sauces & gravy mixes–oh my!

Full Flavor Foods

I have been wanting creamy soups to replace my Campbell’s creamy chicken soup or creamy onion soup for sauce bases and casseroles. I can make them myself, but I’d rather not. Yesterday at the GF & allergen free expo, a company named FULL FLAVOR FOODS has got my seal of approval.

Their cheese sauce was wonderful. My husband is in love with sausage biscuit gravy. He loved it!

My only problem is that the soup packets are $2.00+ and the sauces are about $3.25. Kinda steep for my budget, but I’ll pay it if I’m really craving fettuccine alfredo!

My favorite GF company :)

Kinnikinnick Foods

Oh Heavens, if I could only pick ONE company to buy my GF products from it would be Kinnikinnick! I LOVE saying their name! They have the most awesome pizza crusts and cookies. They’re vanilla cream cookies taste like birthday cake! Oh, I so wanted another sample yesterday 🙂

Don’t like Lentils? — you will now!

Enjoy Life Foods

They’re called Plentils in four different flavors. The first ingredient is lentils! BUT they taste like baked potato chips. They are wonderful.

Here’s their web site:

I scream for ice cream — NOT this kind :(

There was one very disappointing product at the Gluten Free Allergen Free Expo yesterday. It is the ice cream from WayFare. It is 100% dairy free and Gluten Free (most ice cream is). I tried the Lemon Sunshine and my husband tried the Vanilla Creme. We both threw our samples away. Oh what a horrible product.

Here is their web site:
